The Coding Monk

Software · Servers · Linux · Privacy

I build things, fix things, and keep perfectly good technology alive.

From old computers and private alternatives to Big Tech services to web applications, databases, and mail servers — practical solutions for projects large and small.

Make old things useful again

A computer doesn’t become useless just because its manufacturer stops supporting it. Linux and the right software can often give older hardware many more productive years.

Take back your data

You don’t have to give every file, photo, contact, and calendar to a handful of large technology companies. I can help you find practical alternatives — from simple local solutions to your own private services.

Servers & Mail

Linux servers, Nginx, databases, mail systems, spam filtering, security, migrations, and troubleshooting. Whether something needs setting up, maintaining, or simply figuring out why it stopped working.

Web Front- & Backend

Websites and web applications with Laravel, PHP, SQL, and modern frontend tools — from new projects to existing applications that need updating, restructuring, or rescuing.

The person behind The Coding Monk

I’m Matthias Schmidt, a German developer and system administrator based in the Canary Islands. I’ve been working with computers and software for decades — and I’m also a Buddhist monk. Hence the name.

I work remotely as well as locally , on projects large and small.

I don’t solder cables or crimp connectors anymore — but if it runs software, stores data, serves a website, or sends mail, there’s a good chance I can help.

Have something that needs fixing?

Tell me briefly what you’re trying to do or what’s gone wrong. If it’s something I can help with, I’ll let you know.

Understand what exists. Keep what works. Improve what doesn’t.
